Category Strategy Tips From the Field

Choosing categories isn't a set-it-and-forget-it decision. These are strategies we use with our clients to maximize visibility year-round.

Match Your Primary to Your Core Service

Your primary category should be the closest possible match to what you actually do day-to-day. A company that mostly does AC work should consider "Air Conditioning Contractor" over the broader "HVAC Contractor." Specificity often outranks generality in local search.

    Seasonal & Geographic Primary Swaps

Your primary category can be more powerful when it's seasonal or geographic. In winter, many people search "furnace repair", so being "Furnace Repair Service" or "Heating Contractor" as your primary can outperform "HVAC Contractor." In summer, "Air Conditioning Contractor" or "Air Conditioning Repair Service" captures the highest-intent searches.

Run a search for your primary service terms in your area and see who's ranking in the Map Pack. Look at what their primary category is. That's real market data.

⚠️ Do NOT change your primary category often. Frequent changes can trigger a suspension. We typically change at most 2 times per year. Once you dial it in, leave it.

    Spy on Your Top Competitors

Search your main service + city and look at who's in the Map Pack. Check their GBP categories using tools like GMB Everywhere or Pleper. If the top 3 competitors all use a specific primary, that's a strong signal for what Google rewards in your market.

Why GBP Categories Matter for Local Ranking

Primary Category = #1 Ranking Factor

Your primary category has the strongest influence on which Map Pack results you appear in. It must exactly match what your business does.

    Secondaries Expand Visibility

Secondary categories help you show up for related searches. A plumber adding "Water Heater Installation Service" ranks for those specific queries too.

    Common Mistakes Kill Rankings

Picking a category that's too broad, adding irrelevant secondaries, or leaving the wrong primary all dilute your ranking power. Precision wins.

How to Choose the Right GBP Category (Step-by-Step)

A 5-step framework we use with every client before touching their Google Business Profile.

    1. 1

      Define your highest-revenue service

Not your widest service — your most profitable one. That's your primary category candidate.

    2. 2

Search your target keyword + city in an incognito window

Look at the top 3 Map Pack results. Note each business's primary category (use GMB Everywhere or Pleper to view it).

    3. 3

Pick the closest exact-match official category

Use the search tool above. If 'Air conditioning contractor' exists, don't default to the broader 'HVAC contractor.' Specificity wins.

    4. 4

Add 3 to 7 secondaries that describe services you actually deliver

Every secondary should match a real, billable service. Stuffing irrelevant categories dilutes your primary.

    5. 5

Lock it in for at least 6 months

Frequent primary changes can trigger suspension. Set, monitor rank changes weekly, and only swap seasonally if data justifies it.

7 Common GBP Category Mistakes That Kill Local Rankings

    Picking the broadest category

'Contractor' or 'Service establishment' tells Google nothing. Use the most specific match available.

    Stuffing 10+ irrelevant secondaries

Categories you don't actually serve dilute relevance signals for your real services.

    Changing your primary every month

Google can flag rapid primary changes as suspicious. Keep changes to 1 or 2 per year max.

    Copying a competitor blindly

Their categories may be wrong, or their service mix may differ. Validate against your own revenue.

    Ignoring seasonal intent

If 80% of summer revenue is AC repair, your winter primary may be sabotaging summer rankings or vice versa.

    Forgetting category-page alignment

Your website service pages should mirror your GBP categories. Misalignment weakens both signals.

    Choosing a deprecated category

Google retires categories quietly. Always verify against the current official list (the search above is updated).

    GBP Category Glossary

    Primary Category
The single most important category on your Google Business Profile. It's the strongest signal Google uses to decide which local searches you appear for.
    Secondary Category
Additional categories (up to 9) that describe other services you offer. They expand your visibility for related searches without replacing your primary.
    Map Pack
The block of 3 local business results that appears at the top of Google search for location-based queries. Your primary category heavily influences whether you appear here.
    Category Stuffing
Adding irrelevant secondary categories in an attempt to rank for more searches. This dilutes your relevance and can harm rankings.
    Service Area Business (SAB)
A business that travels to customers (HVAC, plumbing, mobile services). Category choice for SABs is even more critical since you can't anchor to a storefront.
    GBP Suspension
When Google disables your Business Profile, often triggered by rapid category changes, NAP inconsistency, or policy violations. Recovery can take weeks.
    NAP
Name, Address, Phone. Must be identical across your GBP, website, and citations or it weakens trust signals.
